Haiti - Player of the Year : Interview with «Corventina» at FIFA 27/10/2024 10:15:35
FIFA : Melchie, how did you feel about being elected 2023/24 Concacaf Player of the Year and how did you find out ? It was a surprise and all my teammates were accomplices. I was very happy to hear the voices of my close friends, my teammates who are cheering me on for this trophy. I am truly honored and very grateful. I also thank my teammates who were able to put me in the right conditions so that this trophy would fall to me. FIFA : You beat the American Olympic champion Sophia Smith, the Canadian Adriana Léon, the Jamaican Khadija Shaw and the Mexicans Charlyn Corral and Lizbeth Ovalle. How does that feel ? I am very happy to receive this trophy because when I see who was in the race with me, they are extremely strong and extraordinary players in their club and who also do a lot of things in their national team. I think I deserve this trophy even if I was not able to play all the matches. But when I did, I did important things with my team, even if they did too. I don't like to talk about myself, but if I have to, I would say that I try to take responsibility when the moment calls for it. And so I am there for the team, I manage to make my abilities and my talent speak, and my whole team benefits from it. And I am very happy because my performances allow us to complete the mission that we have together. FIFA : How far will Corventina go ? Honestly, I don't set limits for myself. I try to progress every day and today, I have the opportunity to train with the best in the club. They make me grow a lot. I learn everything there is to learn and I try to grow every day to reach the top and stay there. On a daily basis, it is a lot of work, a lot of determination. I take each training session as a match. I am very demanding of myself and I learn from my mistakes. I listen to my teammates' opinions so that I can progress further and create bonds with them to make things easier for us. FIFA : You reunited with your Haitian teammates after a long absence from the national team, during the Pink Ladies Week friendly tournament. Yes, I am very happy to join them because it had been at least a year since I had joined the national team. The match [against Chinese Taipei] was very difficult because the opponent took the lead and we missed a lot of chances. But we showed character, we didn't give up until the last minute. Our individual talent made the difference and collectively, we were very solid too. We are trying to put this match behind us because it was a golden opportunity to be able to participate in this new competition and we missed it. We do not forget the match itself, we learn from it to progress and move forward. One thing that pushes us to evolve further is to learn from our mistakes and continue to grow because we have a very young group. When we make mistakes, we learn and that is what makes us a very solid and united team today. The only best memory we have is qualifying because we set foot in history. We made our country proud. In the tournament itself, I can say that it was our resilience in all three matches. We were not below our opponents who were nevertheless tough. So all that I can say that we will continue to work so that the next World Cup goes better. FIFA : The next World Cup will be in 2027 in Brazil. Will Haiti be there ? We are doing the work to prepare and we will do everything we can to qualify for this World Cup. We have already tasted a World Cup, we do not want to miss another one. We will go there with all our soul, face our opponents and make our country proud. FIFA : A word of conclusion ? I would like to thank all the Haitians who support us around the world, who do not stop sending us messages of support in both the strong and weak moments. We are very grateful to them because they are the ones who make us want to go all the way when we have difficult matches, when we are going to start competitions.
