Haiti - Environment : Official launch of the 2024 School Rally
Friday, October 25, 2024, in order to reduce the risks of natural disasters and promote education aimed at sustainable development, the Office of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO - Haiti), in partnership with the Haitian National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO, the Ministry of National Education, the Ministry of the Environment and the Directorate of Civil Protection, launched the 2024 School Rally in the presence of Prime Minister Garry Conille.

This activity will take place from Thursday, October 31 to Monday, November 4th, in the city of Les Cayes.

The project is funded by the Climate Change Adaptation Fund and will be implemented in conjunction with the Haitian National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO, the Haitian Government, the United Nations system in Haiti, Le Nouvelliste and Radio Télé Caraïbes.

The school rally for disaster risk reduction and education for sustainable development consists of a series of training modules through the organization of practical workshops. 200 students from 40 schools in the city of Les Cayes will participate.

Through this rally, students will visit ecological sites, learn first aid gestures and the transformation of waste into useful objects. They will also learn how to implement school emergency plans and community and family evacuation plans. They will also participate in reforestation efforts by planting seedlings

The leaders of the various institutions involved in this Rally, indicated that this activity aims to raise awareness among participants on the values, attitudes and behaviors of responsible citizens, particularly with regard to environmental protection and reducing the risks of natural disasters that frequently affect the country.

This will also be an opportunity for the Ministry of the Environment to launch the second edition of the "Eco-genius" competition, in which students from nearly thirty schools in the Great South are expected to participate.
