Haiti - Great South : Decisions and interventions of the DG of the Ministry of Health

Dr. Gabriel Timothée, Director General of the Ministry of Public Health, headed a delegation and conducted a 7-day tour of the Great South of Haiti at the end of October, with the aim of improving access to and the quality of health care.

Currently, this region is facing some major challenges, particularly in terms of human resources, energy for major surgical procedures and reception capacity.

This tour made it possible to assess the most urgent needs of the Departmental Directorates and to put in place measures to strengthen support and monitoring. Several important decisions were taken and various interventions carried out, among others :

  • Launch of the preparation of operational plans for the Health District Units (UAS);

  • Start of a study on the mapping of family health teams to strengthen their capacities;

  • Reactivation of the service contracts of former contract workers to improve staff availability;

  • Contracting certain members of staff on a paid basis to finance the acquisition of fuel and inputs;

  • Installation of two autoclaves for the sterilization of equipment at the Sainte Thérèse hospital in Miragoâne;

  • Rehabilitation of the outpatient clinic of the Immaculée Conception Hospital in Les Cayes to increase its reception capacity;

  • Making specialist doctors available in departmental hospitals;

  • Reception of a space for the Miragoâne UAS office.
