Haiti - Social : Tripling of the number of camps threatened of expulsion

According to the latest of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on the expulsion of refugees living in camps, about 100.557 people are currently threatened with eviction, representing 18.26% of the total number of displaced people currently living in camps in Haiti.

The report adds that since September 2010, "a cumulative total of 371 sites in 12 municipalities, have faced threats of eviction, which represents more than three times the number of cases reported a year ago. Since July 2010, more than 58.500 people have been expelled."

Of the 371 sites threatened, 82 of them have found an agreement and have not made expulsions. Among them, 40 camps have been the subject of a mediation process conducted by IOM with landowners. In 42 other camps, return assistance was provided to displaced persons. Resolved cases benefited to 51.740 displaced persons.

The report also shows that "5% of the displaced population currently threatened with eviction is installed on public land and 93% on private land. Delmas continues to be the most affected town, 66 sites are under threat, followed by Tabarre, with 32 cases and Carrefour with 17.
