Haiti - Economy : Evaluation of the Kenscoff Communal Market

As part of the assessment of the socio-economic infrastructure of Kenscoff, a delegation from the Economic and Social Assistance Fund (FAES) visited the Kenscoff Municipal Market to assess the general condition of the market, its level of functionality and accessibility.

It should be remembered that the Kenscoff Municipal Market was built thanks to a donation from Mexican cooperation between 2013 and 2014, under the administration of former mayor François Jean Paul. Currently, the market is under the administrative authority of the Kenscoff town hall.

The delegation noted several points concerning the state of the place and the needs :

1. General condition of the market :

- The market remains functional despite challenges related to maintenance and management;

- Part of the infrastructure is degraded, limiting the reception capacity.

2. Accessibility :

The intersection between the main road and the Villier road remains strategic but could benefit from improvements;

3. Identified problems :

- Lack of a solar system for lighting;

- Lack of an underground reservoir for water storage;

- Inadequate sanitation facilities;

- Roofs in poor condition requiring reconstruction;

- Barriers and peripheral structures requiring repairs.

Urgent Priority needs :

To improve the functioning and accessibility of the market, the following needs are priorities:

1) Installation of a solar system to ensure constant lighting;

2) Construction of an underground reservoir to meet water needs;

3) Renovation of sanitary blocks to ensure adequate hygiene conditions;

4) Repair or replacement of damaged roofs;

5) Rehabilitation of barriers and other peripheral structures.

Recommendations :

- Collaboration between the town hall, the FAES and other partners (such as international cooperation) is necessary to meet these needs;

- The establishment of a periodic maintenance plan will prevent future deterioration of the infrastructure;

- Discussions with traders and the local population could help prioritize interventions and ensure sustainable management of the market.

Conclusion :

The Kenscoff Communal Market is a vital asset for the local population. However, current challenges call for urgent investments to ensure its sustainability and functionality. The FAES could play a crucial role in mobilizing the resources needed for this work.
