Haiti - Social : Live in the respect of human dignity

To mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, commemorated this Saturday, December 3, François Richel Lafaille, the Minister of Social Affairs and Labour has wished to reassure people in mobility disability, that he will wit his Secretary of State for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities, Gérald Oriol Jr., combine their efforts in order that the law passed to the Chamber of Deputies, who is still waiting in the Senate of the Republic, become a reality in order to allow "to you disabled, to live your life in the respect of human dignity..."

The day before this International Day, Gerald Oriol declared :

"... [...] It is necessary to be lucid and that never we can prevent or cure all the deficiencies. Our possibilities are limited, whatever may be the technical or medical advanced. However, there are demands where the possibilities are virtually endless and often simple to implement, yet it is this area that is most often overlooked [...] solidarity towards people with disabilities may be exercised by accessibility. We can not re-give the legs to an amputee and even if an amputee may benefit from an prosthesis, we cannot dream that every need is filled. However, we can perfectly conceive buildings with handrails for a lame can climb the stairs without difficulty and ramps to allow someone in a wheelchair to enter. Similarly, we can easily construct new buildings in this way, and we can, with the will and a minimal investment, gradually improving existing buildings and to reserve parking spaces close to the appropriate access.

Physical access to buildings is one thing, access to a service in this building is another. It is therefore important that in the public institutions, banks, hospitals, airports, shops, people with disabilities, benefit from increased attention and priority access that will enable them to feel accepted, not to go last, and finally, to be able to exercise their right while using their energy to positive things, instead of just fighting until exhaustion to obtain a minimum..."

For his part, the Minister of Social Affairs and Labour indicated "I would like to reassure you, you disabled people, [...] you have rights, rights that you will have to practice from the law already passed in the Chamber of Deputies and who is still waiting in the Senate of the Republic. The Secretary of State and I are trying to combine our efforts so that this law become a reality. This law will allow you to live your life in the respect of human dignity..."
