Haiti - Securit y: Rescue at sea of 2 people 74 km south of Jacmel

On Friday, January 31, 2025, an activated emergency position indicating radio beacon alerted Coast Guard District Seven watchstanders of the sailing vessel Malou’s distress. Watchstanders notified their counterparts with the Joint Rescue Coordination Center Port-au-Prince, Haiti, who requested assistance to help the 2 people who were on board the sailboat.

A Jayhawk helicopter crew from Operation Bahamas Turks and Caicos arrived on scene and hoisted the captain and one passenger safely aboard the helicopter. The survivors were safely transported to Great Inagua, Bahamas.

"Our crew was able to hone in on the vessel’s position and quickly arrive on scene because the captain of the vessel activated his properly registered EPIRB Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB, GPS emergency beacon)," said Lieutenant Warren Chan, pilot of the helicopter deployed as part of the Bahamas Turks and Caicos operation.
