This Saturday, January 8, 2025 at 6:36:14 am, an earthquake of 7.6 on the Richter scale was recorded in the Caribbean Sea.

The epicenter was located at sea at 17.702 degrees North latitude and 82.456 degrees West longitude, 320 km North of Honduras, 529 km South of Cuba, 843 km West of Haiti.

The United States Tsunami Warning System issued a "Potential Threat" advisory at 6:43:26 pm for Haiti, Belize, the Bahamas, Costa Rica, the Cayman Islands, Cuba, Nicaragua, Panama, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Jamaica.

An "Advisory" was issued at 6:36:52 for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

The "Potential Threat" advisory is still in force for Haiti. A threat advisory for Cuba and the Cayman Islands has been issued with a sea novel fluctuation possibility of 30cm to 1 meter for Cuba, and 1 to 3 meters for Cuba.

The earliest estimated time that hazardous sea level fluctuations and strong ocean currents may begin in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands at 9h46 pm AST on Saturday February 8 2025.

UPDATE 8h13 PM : The Tsunami Advisory is now CANCELED for PR and the USVI informs the National Weather Service San Juan (PR).

The Dominican government has also cancelled the tsunami alert.

UPDATE 9h15 pm : "No Tsunami Warning, Advisory, Watch, or Threat

THE TSUNAMI THREAT HAS NOW LARGELY PASSED," indicates the United States Tsunami Warning System."

Today, February 8, 2024, at 9:10 p.m., the General Directorate of Civil Protection: BASED ON information obtained from the Maritime and Navigation Services of Haiti, regarding the earthquake of magnitude 7.6, which occurred this afternoon, at 6:23 p.m., off the coast of Honduras, at a depth of 33 kilometers DECIDES to terminate the alert issued at 6:49 a.m., today, February 8, 2025, for the department of Grand'Anse, due to the threat of a tsunami.
