Haiti - FLASH : MSF suspends its activities in Turgeau and Carrefour

Following the targeted attack on March 15 against a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) convoy on the road linking the Turgeau Emergency Center and the Carrefour Trauma Hospital https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-44502-haiti-insecurity-4-msf-vehicles-hit-by-gunfire-during-the-evacuation-of-the-turgeau-emergency-center.html and given the deteriorating security situation in downtown Port-au-Prince, MSF has made the difficult decision to suspend its activities in these two facilities for a minimum of three months, starting April 9, 2025. This period will allow us to assess whether the evolving security situation provides the necessary conditions for the return of its teams.

"The Turgeau emergency centre and the Carrefour trauma hospital are closely linked in their operations. Without the possibility of using this road to transfer patients, transport personnel or deliver medical supplies, these structures can no longer function

This is why we have also been forced to withdraw from Carrefour as of 9 April 2025. This is an extremely painful decision, at a time when people’s vital medical needs continue to grow," said Benoît Vasseur, MSF Head of Mission in Haiti.

Despite this suspension, MSF continues its activities in other medical facilities in Port-au-Prince and in the South Department. The Tabarre Trauma Reference Center continues to treat victims of serious burns, accidents, and violence. In Cité Soleil, Drouillard Hospital maintains a 24/7 emergency department, providing both medical care and physical and mental health support to victims of sexual and gender-based violence. The Pran Men'm clinic also continues to provide medical and psychological support to victims of sexual violence, particularly through facilities located in Delmas and at the Isaïe Jeanty maternity hospital.

Since 2021, MSF has also deployed mobile clinics in several sites hosting displaced people, as well as in disadvantaged neighborhoods of Port-au-Prince. However, due to the security situation, medical transport is currently suspended for all MSF teams in the capital. In the South Department, particularly in and around Port-au-Piment, MSF continues to provide emergency obstetric and neonatal care, as well as maternal health services.
