Haiti - Bicentenary : Ransom of independence speech by President Fritz Alphonse Jean (video)
On Thursday, April 17, 2025, at the Villa d'Accueil, the Presidential Transitional Council (CPT) commemorated the bicentennial of King Charles X's ordinance recognizing the Independence of the Republic of Haiti, issued on April 17, 1825.

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils Aimé, members of his government, the Commander-in-Chief of the Haitian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Derby Guerrier, the Acting Director General of the Haitian National Police (PNH), Rameau Normil, and the Rector of the State University of Haiti (UEH), Dieuseul Prédélus.

Fritz Alphonse Jean, President pro tempore of the Transitional Council, in his speech for the occasion, mentioned the various steps taken by the French authorities that led to the ordinance of King Charles X, recognizing Haiti's independence and forcing the country to pay a ransom of approximately 150 million gold francs. For the king, this was a means of punishing Haiti after having paved the way for freedom within humanity. President Jean, for whom "it is urgent to work in light of the sacrifice of our ancestors for the good of the country," said he had taken note of President Macron's speech published by the Élysée Palace on the occasion of this day https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-44717-haiti-price-of-independence-macron-takes-a-small-step-toward-recognizing-a-moral-debt-statement.html which evokes "a renewed relationship between France and Haiti, based on listening, respect, and solidarity."
