Haiti - FLASH : General blackout

On Thursday, May 15, 2025, in a press release, Électricité d'Haïti (EDH) informed the general public and its subscribers in particular that since May 13, its electricity production has been reduced to ZERO. This unfortunate situation is due to acts of invasion of the Péligre hydroelectric power plant. This heinous act plunges the areas still supplied with electricity by EDH into a total blackout.

It should be remembered that such actions, far from meeting the population's electricity needs, only compound EDH's difficulties, as the power plant operating equipment is expensive and difficult to repair, maintain, or even replace.

EDH urgently calls on the relevant authorities to conduct an investigation to identify, prosecute, and punish the perpetrators of such acts, which penalize the population, and to take the necessary measures to secure the Péligre Hydroelectric Power Plant, a structure as important as it is strategic for the Haitian state.

EDH reiterates to its subscribers its commitment to resuming service as soon as possible once a safe environment has been restored for its employees and technicians. It also requests their active participation in protecting EDH equipment and that of the Haitian state in general.

According to available information, a group of highly motivated Mirebalais residents entered the power plant and forced its shutdown to protest the invasion of gangs that are establishing themselves in Mirebalais, amidst the indifference of the government and law enforcement.

Without the Péligré power plant, the E-Power electricity production unit, with its twenty megawatts, cannot supply the grid alone. It is also impossible to rely on the other thermal power plants, which are either out of service or running out of fuel.
