Haiti - Environment : Hurricane season begins

On Friday, May 30, the General Directorate of Civil Protection held a ceremony at the National Emergency Operations Center to mark the start of the hurricane season (June 1st) in the North Atlantic, the Caribbean, and the Gulf of Mexico.

Informing, raising awareness, and mobilizing all stakeholders involved in disaster risk management : this is the main objective of this activity, organized in a context of the country's high vulnerability and forecasts of a hurricane season that promises to be eventful. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-45007-haiti-flash-d-3-all-the-forecasts-for-the-2025-hurricane-season.html

Several prominent figures took part in this ceremony, demonstrating the determination of stakeholders to strengthen the country's resilience in the face of major climate hazards. Among others, Fritz Alphonse Jean, President pro tempore of the Transitional Council, Paul Antoine Bien-Aimé, Minister of the Interior and Local Authorities, Arsonval Alexandre, Mayor of Tabarre, Emmanuel Pierre, Director General of Civil Protection, members of the Government, UN agencies, and Civil Protection officials.

In his address, President Jean placed particular emphasis on the need to use state resources, through the budget, to prevent risks and protect citizens' lives. "The hurricane season is not inevitable, but a challenge to be met," he declared, emphasizing the importance of preparation to deal with climatic hazards.

In line with this same spirit, Minister of the Interior Paul Antoine Bien-Aimé invited the public to adopt the following actions :

- Prepare an emergency kit;

- Participate in prevention;

- Follow the instructions of the relevant authorities.

For his part, Emmanuel Pierre emphasized the importance of risk mitigation work in major urban centers. He notably mentioned the rehabilitation of six of the ten departmental emergency operations centers, advocating for the realization of the project for a resilient city by the 2025 hurricane season.

The ceremony also featured the presentation of 20 young Civil Protection ambassadors from the ten geographic departments, who will be both beneficiaries and co-builders of resilience, thanks to their commitment to mobilizing and raising awareness in their communities with Civil Protection messages.
