Haiti - Agriculture : Important meeting on the poultry sector

Following the meeting on May 20, 2025, regarding the poultry production deficit in Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-44990-haiti-agriculture-working-meeting-on-the-revival-of-the-haitian-poultry-sector.html , Presidential Advisor Leslie Voltaire, accompanied by Ministers Alfred Fils Métellus (Economy), James Monazard (Trade), and two senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Paul Moïse Gabriel and Damoclès Terméus, met with poultry producers on Friday, June 20, 2025.

During this meeting, discussions focused on the possible solutions presented in the document proposed by the sector.

Several decisions were adopted, including :

- The inclusion of support for the poultry sector in the formulation of the Ministry of Agriculture's budget;

- The Ministry of Economy and Finance will provide additional resources to the sector;

- The Ministry of Trade and Industry will encourage the consolidation of stakeholders in the poultry sector so that they can benefit from incentives;

- In addition to implementing the tax measures outlined in the Finance Law, a study was proposed to review the duties and taxes imposed on the agricultural sector.

Participants agreed that agricultural production in general can be one of the drivers of the country's economic development. To achieve this, the Presidential Transitional Council, the Government, and stakeholders in the sector agreed to encourage domestic consumption in order to gradually reduce imports and regain food sovereignty. Note that the Haitian poultry sector currently imports almost all of its needs : eggs (more than 40 million eggs consumed per month), hatching eggs, animal feed, equipment, etc., from the Dominican Republic, the leading producer of eggs and chickens in the Caribbean.
