Haiti - Agriculture : 4,7 million for farmers

The Ambassador of Japan in Haiti, Kentaro Minami and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Religious Affairs, Laurent Lamothe have proceeded to the signature of two agreements, the first by exchange of notes, the second on a cash donation. The signing ceremony was held in Port-au-Prince.

The donation amounts to USD$ 4 743 589,74 and is designed to help the agricultural sector hard hit after January 12. Kentaro Minami said "This fund provide to Haiti by the Japanese government will allow the Haitian authorities to buy fertilizers and agricultural inputs to support poor farmers" living in rural areas.

For his part, Laurent Lamothe hopes that these agreements may allow, not only the improvement of the quality of products of farmers but also to increase the yield of their plantations, and in fact reduce food insecurity.

Inputs and fertilizers will be entrusted to the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development (MARNDR), farmers will be able to purchase inputs and agricultural fertilizers at reduced prices.
