Haiti - Environment : The Ouanaminthe Botanical Garden launches its climate plan (2025-2030)

As part of its commitment to combating climate change, the Ouanaminthe Botanical Garden (JBO) is launching its Climate Plan for the period 2025-2030. The main objective is ambitious and impactful : to plant 50,000 trees in five years, or approximately 10,000 trees per year. This effort aims to strengthen local biodiversity, restore degraded areas, and support community resilience to the effects of climate change.

The plan is based on four main pillars.

First pillar B>

The first pillar concerns production and supply. A central nursery has been established at the Garden to produce at least 12,000 plants per year, with priority given to native and endemic species adapted to the climate of northeastern Haiti: fruit trees (mango, avocado, breadfruit (Lam veritab), etc...), forest species (mahogany, sweet pea, bamboo, sandberry, oak, etc...), and ornamentals.

Second pillar :

The second pillar focuses on planting and maintenance. Mass planting campaigns will be organized during the rainy season, and a two-year monitoring and watering program will ensure a survival rate of at least 80%.

Third pillar :

The third pillar focuses on partnerships and funding. The JBO works hand in hand with local schools, community organizations, environmental NGOs, and local authorities. Local communities will actively participate in planting activities and will receive training in agroecology and sustainable management. Local businesses and those from the Haitian diaspora will be involved in social responsibility and green sponsorship programs.

Fourth pillar :

The fourth pillar concerns monitoring and evaluation. A digital and mapping tracking system will be implemented to measure plantings and their survival rate. An annual climate report will document progress and maintain project transparency.

Timeline :

• 2025 : Priority is given to the production of the first seedlings and the first pilot planting campaigns.

• 2026 to 2030 : Cruising speed will be reached with approximately 10,000 trees planted each year, accompanied by awareness campaigns in schools and communities.

• 2030 : The Botanical Garden will reach its goal of planting 50,000 trees and present a final report, paving the way for a new phase of expansion.

Through this Climate Plan, the JBO aims to become a major player in reforestation and ecological resilience in Haiti. By 2030, the 50,000 trees planted will contribute to carbon sequestration, improving air quality, combating soil erosion, and raising awareness among thousands of citizens about environmental protection.
