Haiti - Economy : Status of Diaspora Remittances to Haiti 01/12/2025 09:08:14
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Group’s report, Remittances to Latin America and the Caribbean in 2025, notably examines Haiti’s situation compared to its Caribbean neighbors in terms of diaspora remittance flows. The report indicates that the Caribbean sub-region is expected to register a 9.2% growth rate in remittances in 2025, a positive rate but more moderate than that of Central America. The total amount of remittances for all Caribbean countries is estimated at approximately US$20.9 billion in 2025, primarily driven by the strong performance of remittances to the Dominican Republic ($11.9 billion). The main sources of remittances to the Caribbean are the United States (50.4%), followed by Canada (10.6%). Haiti is the second largest recipient in the sub-region, ahead of Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, with US$4.9 billion. The United States is the primary source of remittances for Haiti, accounting for 62.8% of the funds, followed by Canada with 10.6%. The remainder comes from other countries, a significant portion of which originates from Haitians in the diaspora living in the Dominican Republic. The share of remittances in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Caribbean countries is projected to increase from 9.2% in 2024 to 10.0% in 2025 (driven by a 1.3 percentage point increase in the Dominican Republic), with the exception of Haiti, whose share of GDP has fallen by 3.6%.
