Haiti - Security : Rotation of Guatemalan troops

Guatemala remains a steadfast partner in security stabilization efforts in Haiti, demonstrating early and concrete commitment. In January 2025, Guatemala deployed 150 personnel, including specialized military police, to bolster the operations of the international mission alongside contingents from Kenya, El Salvador, Jamaica, and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.

Unlike the other troops, the Guatemalan contingent was initially tasked with infrastructure protection. Its duties also included security for the mission headquarters, the protection of dignitaries, and support for the civilian population, among other responsibilities.

Beyond the numbers, Guatemala’s contribution symbolized significant regional solidarity. It reflected Central America’s willingness to stand with the Caribbean in the face of complex security challenges requiring collective action and shared responsibility.

As part of the ramp-up toward full operational capability, contributing countries are continuing structured rotations of their personnel. These rotations ensure continued effectiveness, operational continuity, and renewed energy within the force.

On February 14 and 16, 2026, Guatemala rotated its troops, deploying new specialized military police units to the theater of operations. The flag handover ceremony took place on the tarmac of Toussaint Louverture International Airport in the presence of the Chief of the Defence Staff, José Giovani Martínez. The incoming contingent brings enhanced expertise, strong discipline, and increased operational focus, strengthening the capacity of the Gang Supression Force (GRF) at a critical juncture in its mandate.

On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at LSA1, GRF Commander Godfrey Otunge officially welcomed the new Guatemalan contingent, accompanied by the mission's senior directors.

In his address, he expressed his gratitude to the Government of Guatemala for its unwavering commitment to Haiti. He commended the professionalism and discipline of the Guatemalan officers and emphasized the importance of teamwork, unity of purpose, and mutual respect among the diverse cultures represented within the Mission. He reiterated that diversity is one of the Mission's strengths, fostering cooperation and mutual learning among partner nations.
