Did you know that a "skidpad (medium-sized pickaxe) is a manual plowing tool emblematic of the Haitian hills. Unlike the classic hoe, its design allows more aggressive and deep tillage of the soil, particularly suitable for sloping ground and heavy soils or soils congested with roots.It is the tool of choice for the initial clearing and weeding of food crops at altitude.

The use of these tools, such as the dao (a sort of short and wide machete) or the digging stick, demonstrates a technical adaptation to the topographical constraints of the country where motorized mechanization remains difficult, if not impossible.

These tools, although simple in design, require great physical mastery and precise knowledge of the structure of the soil. The preservation of this technical know-how, combined with an improvement in the ergonomics of tools, remains a challenge for the productivity of the small mountain farmer who ensures the majority of national food production."
