Haiti - Social : Two years later, Montreal remembers

As part of the commemoration of the second anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010, Gérald Tremblay, Mayor of Montreal, has wished to highlight once again the unwavering solidarity of Montrealers with the Haitian people hit hard... He also recalled the commitment of the City of Montreal to participate actively in the reconstruction of Port-au-Prince.

"These are the Haitians who first acted on the ground after this terrible event. However, it was important for the City of Montreal to be also present to support the citizens of Port-au-Prince in their reconstruction projects, given the close ties that unite us. Much of our efforts so far have focused on knowledge transfer, support for governance and some projects. Our objective is to allow Port-au-Prince to rebuild as quickly as possible in order to be able to offer services to its population," declared the Mayor of Montreal, a member of the Presidential Investment Advisory Concil (PIAC).

A ceremony of remembrance and recognition will be held this Thursday, January 12th at 4pm at the Hotel de Ville of Montreal. An opportunity to remember of thesesad events, but also to highlight the work done in Haiti by employees of the City of Montreal, Quebec and Canadian cities through the Municipal Cooperation Program (CMP) as well as by police officers of Montreal Police Service (SPVM). This will also be the moment to recognize the efforts of public and community agencies of Montreal to welcome the Haitian in the aftermath of the earthquake. A minute of silence will also be observed at 4h53pm, exact time where the earthquake with a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale struck Haiti.
