Haiti - «unsustainable food inflation» says the Governor of the BRH

In Washington, D.C., during the Spring Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank, Ronald Gabriel, Governor of the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH), participated in several meetings with delegations from the BRH and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, including the G24 Ministerial Meeting, in which he intervened...

As he emphasized in his remarks at the G24 meeting for the most vulnerable economies, these developments are resulting in "unsustainable food inflation, a contraction of fiscal space, and a deterioration of living conditions for the most exposed populations.”

Remarks by Ronald Gabriel, Governor of the Bank of the Republic of Haiti :

"[...] We commend the rigorous work of the G24 Secretariat and wish to highlight a few key points in the current context.

Our economies are facing multiple and simultaneous crises that are no longer exceptional phenomena; they have become a structural reality.

The repercussions of this new conflict on global oil and food prices are compounding already deep-seated vulnerabilities. For the most vulnerable countries, these shocks are not abstract; they translate into unsustainable food inflation, shrinking fiscal space, and a deterioration in the living conditions of the most exposed populations. Added to this are the reconfiguration of global trade, the tightening of migration policies, and the drastic reduction in international aid, which deprive some of our countries of vital resources at a time when they need them most.

Haiti offers a striking illustration: confronted with acute internal vulnerabilities, it is absorbing the full force of these cumulative exogenous shocks, at the risk of jeopardizing gains achieved in a particularly difficult context. The question before us is simple : what concrete steps are we taking for these countries ?

Two institutional reforms seem fundamental.

First, the swift conclusion of the 16th General Review of Quotas. Adequate and equitably allocated resources are a prerequisite for the Fund to effectively meet the real needs of all its members.

Second, truly inclusive governance. We call for the acceleration of discussions on the representation of fragile states, to amplify their voice in decision-making bodies and fully involve them in the design of innovative instruments tailored to their specific vulnerabilities. Countries in conflict cannot afford to wait.

Mr. President, we advocate for multilateralism based on concrete operational commitments, not just declarations of principle.

The time for action is now.

Thank you [...]"
