Haiti / DR : Launch of the 14th edition of Diaspora Week

The border town of Pedernales (in the far southwest of the Dominican Republic) hosted the official launch of the 14th Diaspora Week, an initiative of the Zile Foundation that promotes dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and strengthens ties between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

The event brought together local authorities, community leaders, and a large delegation from Anse-à-Pitres, led by Mayor Harry Bruno, who emphasized the crucial role of such forums in strengthening the bonds between the two nations, particularly through the strength of the diaspora.

As guest of honor, former Haitian Prime Minister Jean Henry Céant emphasized the need to approach the relationship between Haiti and the Dominican Republic with realism and a forward-looking vision, advocating for a pragmatic approach to bilateral relations. "No border can erase our interdependence," he affirmed, urging that the border region be seen as a lever for shared prosperity rather than a barrier. He also reiterated that Haiti's reconstruction is inseparable from its diaspora, a true "pool of skills and a global network of influence."

The ceremony began with a minute of silence in tribute to the victims of the tragedy at the Citadelle Laferrière. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-47284-incident-at-the-citadelle-laferriere-more-than-55-victims-reactions.html This moment of reflection preceded a fraternal lunch blessed by priests German Ramírez, parish priest of Pedernales, and Julin Acosta, bringing together approximately 140 guests in an atmosphere of mutual respect and good neighborliness.

This gathering was part of the Dominican-Haitian Fraternity Day (Law 11-05).

Edwin Paraison, director of the Zile Foundation, warmly thanked the sponsors (Western Union, VIMENCA, Sunrise Airways) as well as the Dominican Government for its logistical support. Activities will continue until April 20, reaffirming the Foundation's mission : to build bridges of peace and cooperation between the two peoples.
