Miragoâne prepares to host a large free surgical caravan

The Nippes Department is actively preparing to host a major surgical caravan initiated by the Ministry of Public Health, starting in the first week of June 2026.

At the heart of this operation is Sainte-Thérèse Hospital in Miragoâne, designated as the main center for patient care following an evaluation visit by Dr. Nesi Floris and Dr. Jacques Richard Petit-Ton, representatives of the Ministry. The mission's objectives were to assess hospital infrastructure, analyze available equipment, and define the needs for upcoming surgical procedures.

Under the leadership of the Departmental Health Director, Dr. Esther Ceus Dumont, a working committee has been established to manage the entire process. This committee is headed by Ms. Eluderne Dénius, Coordinator of the Miragoâne Health District, whose mission is to coordinate planning activities to oversee patient identification and organize pre-operative assessments throughout the department.

As part of the preparations, close collaboration was established with the Cuban medical brigade as well as several specialists mobilized locally and at the central level.

The teams involved include surgeons, anesthesiologists, gynecologists, internists, sonographers, and nursing and technical staff. Dr. Amondieu Gabriel, Director of Sainte-Thérèse Hospital, is also actively participating in the preparations as a surgeon.

This initiative has already yielded concrete results with the establishment of a large mobile clinic in Anse-à-Veau, where nearly 100 patients were seen. Initial assessments reveal: a majority of cases of hernias and hydroceles; pathologies requiring general surgery (gallbladder, hemorrhoids, etc...); and a few gynecological cases.

These consultations help to build a solid database of patients awaiting surgery, who are already pre-positioned for the mobile surgical unit.

This surgical caravan is part of the commitments made by Dr. Bertrand Sinal, Minister of Health, who announced a program of free surgeries to address the urgent needs of the population.

Many patients, who have been waiting for a long time due to lack of resources, will thus be able to benefit from specialized care and regain a better quality of life.
