This season opens in a particularly fragile national context, marked by insecurity, significant population displacements fleeing violence, difficulties accessing certain areas, vulnerable infrastructure, and constraints on response capacities. Faced with this reality, AGERCA urges citizens, institutions, businesses, civil society organizations, and communities to prepare now.

AGERCA particularly encourages the following :

• Stay informed only through official channels, including Civil Protection, the Hydrometeorological Unit, AGERCA, and recognized media outlets on a continuous basis;

• Update emergency contacts and focal points within organizations;

• Review business continuity plans;

• Protect essential documents, data, equipment, and assets;

• Prepare a useful emergency kit tailored to actual needs;

• Identify available communication channels in case of disruption;

• Avoid sharing unverified information that could create panic or hinder coordination.

NOAA’s forecast for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1st to November 30, indicates a 35% chance of a near-normal season, a 10% chance of an above-normal season, and a 55% chance of a below-normal season.

The agency forecasts a total of 8 to 14 named storms (winds of 63 km/h or more). Of these, 3 to 6 are expected to become hurricanes (winds of 119 km/h or more), including 1 to 3 major hurricanes (Category 3, 4, or 5 with winds of 179 km/h or more). NOAA has a 70% confidence level in this forecast. An average hurricane season sees 14 named storms, including seven hurricanes, three of which are major hurricanes.
