A haitian police officer implicated in a case of rape of a 14-year-old minor

Pedrica Saint Jean, the Minister for the Status of Women and Women's Rights, in a statement dated June 3rd, expressed her profound indignation and deep concern following serious allegations of rape involving a 14-year-old girl.

According to available information, the Chief Prosecutor of Jérémie has issued a formal summons to police officer Roneld Nelson, assigned to the Bac sub-station in the Grand'Anse department, who is accused of sexually assaulting this young minor within the sub-station itself, to answer for the alleged rape.

The Minister's statement mentions "[...] Allegations also indicate an alleged attempt to buy the silence of the victim's family. If these facts were to be established by the competent judicial authorities, they would constitute a particularly serious violation of the rights of the child, the physical and psychological integrity of the victim, as well as an unacceptable attack on the values of justice, protection, and respect for human dignity that public institutions must embody"

Pedrica Saint Jean firmly reiterates that "sexual violence against women, girls, and children constitutes a serious crime that cannot be tolerated, protected, or allowed to go unpunished, regardless of the status, position, or authority that the alleged perpetrator may claim."

The Minister commends the courage of the victim and her family who, despite alleged attempts at dissuasion, have chosen to trust in the justice system. The Ministry calls upon the competent judicial and police authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial, transparent, and diligent investigation so that the full truth is revealed in this case and that responsibilities are established in accordance with the law.

Saint Jean reiterates her solidarity with the victim, her family, and all those affected by this case, while reaffirming her unwavering commitment to a society where the rights, dignity, and safety of women, girls, and children are fully guaranteed.
