More than 2,300 people killed in Haiti since the beginning of the year

During the 62nd regular session of the Human Rights Council (June 15 to July 7, 2026, in Geneva, Switzerland), Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, in his opening remarks on the global situation, revealed the latest figures on Haiti, indicating that gang violence has caused the deaths of at least 2,300 people, at least 1,100 injuries, and approximately 100 kidnappings.

Volker Türk "urged the authorities to move quickly on the judicial units to tackle impunity." plaguing Haiti, a country plagued for years by instability, where powerful gangs and terrorists commit serial murders, rapes, looting, and kidnappings.

"The Gang Suppression Force (GSF) is urgently needed and needs to operate in line with international human rights law," Türk stated. As a reminder, last year the United Nations Security Council approved the creation of the new International Gang Supression Force (GSF) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-45891-haiti-flash-the-security-council-has-voted-for-the-new-gang-repression-force.html

An initial deployment plan was approved, respecting the ceiling of 5,500 military and police personnel authorized by the Security Council. The phased deployment of this force is expected to be completed by October 2026. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-46702-haiti-security-overview-of-the-frg-deployment-schedule-in-haiti.html
