Haiti - MSF : Resumption of activities at the Isaïe Jeanty maternity hospital

After more than three weeks of interruption due to violent clashes between armed groups, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has gradually resumed its activities at the Isaïe Jeanty Maternity Hospital in Cité Soleil, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health. This resumption of services allows women to once again access care 24/7, in a context where access to healthcare remains extremely difficult.

The facility had been forced to suspend its activities on June 19, 2026 (https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-47804-msf-suspends-operations-at-the-isaie-jeanty-maternity-hospital-in-haiti.html), after five days of intense fighting between armed groups in Cité Soleil, during which bullets struck the maternity ward. Initially, our teams remained on site with a reduced staff to maintain a minimum level of care. However, faced with escalating violence, they were forced to leave.

"It was a particularly difficult decision, as we know how significant the sexual and reproductive health needs are in Cité Soleil. But continuing under these conditions would have put more lives at risk," explains Diana Manilla Arroyo, MSF’s Head of Mission in Haiti.

A relative lull has since allowed MSF teams to gradually return to the maternity ward since mid-July and resume their services, alongside the Ministry of Health: obstetric care, including emergencies, and support for victims of sexual violence. In the first half of 2026, the maternity ward handled 995 births and 122 victims of sexual violence.

MSF also offers free care at Cité Soleil Hospital, the Orezon Health Center in Brooklyn, as well as at Tabarre Hospital and the Pran Men’m Clinic in Delmas 33, further north.
