Haiti - Justice : The lawyer of former Mayor Jason, denounces the absurdities of justice

Friday, a warrant was issued by the Prosecutor of Port-au-Prince, against the former Mayor of Port-au-Prince, Muscadin Jean Yves Jason, for his alleged involvement in the fire of market of port.

Me Newton Saint Just, lawyer of former Mayor reacted "[...] There is a warrant issued against the magistrate Jason, this is something totally fanciful [...] There is no flagrante delicto, certainly that the prosecuting authorities have developed an absurd theory and nonexistent in penal matters [...] we can say that since there was a fire [...] there flagrante delicto !

There are conflicting things compared to what was said at the beginning [...] the prosecution made understood that they needed to question the Magistrate Jason, to understand the mode of operation of security systems at the level of markets when the Magistrate Jason was Mayor [...]

The approach of the prosecution, has been awkward and I think that it continues in this process, outside the law, outside the Constitution. There are authorities in this country who choose to violate the rights of people who choose to ignore individual liberties of people.

But what is worst of all, with all the confirmations that we have, is that we do not have access to documents in the file. But justice is not a secret authority, justice is not a private good, every decision that the judicial authorities want to take against a person, it is necessary that the documents [incriminating] are available (to defense lawyers) [...]

We believe that this is an arbitrary decision [...] it is necessary that the citizen is aware, it is necessary that this be done in a transparent manner, justice must operate in the transparency [...] The warrant was issued Friday afternoon between 3:30pm and 4pm [it should be originally issued Thursday], we have not seen it, but we have the information that it is the Government Commissioner [Jean Renel Sénatus] who signed it, as he had signed the invitation for Mr. Jason June 19..."
