Haiti - Justice : New Peace Court of Jacmel

Thursday, the new Peace Court of Jacmel, was inaugurated in the town of Beaudouin, in the presence of several personalities, including: Mrs. Muzhat Ammad, the Representative of the Minustah, Me Jean Roody Aly, Director General of the Ministry of Justice and public safety, civil authorities of the region and members of the judiciary of the city.

Covering an area of about 261 m2 on two levels, this new building was built and funded to the tune of nearly 100,000 U.S. dollars (3,832,832 Gdes), by the United Nations Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (Minustah), as part of a project to support the Government of Haiti.

This project aims both to improve the image of the Peace Court of Jacmel and enhance the work of the judiciary, and secondly, to guarantee to the population equal access to justice and allow it to be aware and informed on ways of existing actions in the fight against impunity.

In his speech for the occasion, Desrivière Jean Clivens, the JUdge of Peace holder of Peace Court, congratulated the Minustah for its support to the judicial system of the city. The judge reminded the state of disrepair in which officials working in the old building dating back more than fifty years.

For his part, Me Jean Roody Aly, declared that this gesture reflected the strong support of the United Nations Mission in the priority process of the Government Martelly-Lamothe, which aims to establish the rule of law in Haiti "The construction of the new facility that can accommodate the court of Jacmel, will serve as a motivator for judges, as well as all staff members to provide a more equitable justice to litigants, and also enhance the brilliance of the judicial system in the region."

Mrs. Muzhat Ammad, representing Mariano Fernandez, Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in Haiti and Head of the Minustah, stated the stabilization of Haiti must necessarily pass through a fair judicial system and functional "We are concentrating our efforts in the strengthening of institutions of the Rule of law, including security institutions by strengthening the National Police of Haiti (PNH), supporting the justice sector and to the good governance."
