Haiti - Economy : Inflation continues to rise...

The Haitian Institute of Statistics and Informatics (IHSI) informs us that monthly, the level of the General Index of consumer prices in Haiti [base 100 - August 2004], rose from 196.7 during July 2012 to 200.3 in September 2012 (+0.4% in July, 0.9% in August, +1.1% in September)

These figures confirm the continuing rise of the phenomenon of high cost of living [the cost of living in Haiti has doubled in 8 years].

Yoy inflation in September stood at 6.5%, while the previous month, it was 6.1%.

Inflation factors :

The monthly variation recorded results from the upward trend in all functions of consumption: "Food Beverages and Tobacco" (1.1%) "Clothing and Textiles, Footwear" (1.1%), "Rent Housing Energy and Water" (1.5%), "Health" (0.9%), "Leisure, Entertainment, Education and Culture" (1.0%) and "Other Goods and Services" (1.0%).

The increase observed "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" owes its increase in products such as rice (0.4%), millet (2.1%), ground corn (3.7%), beef (0.9%), meat pork (1.4%), goat meat (1.3%), the herring (5.8%), the kazoo, pumpkin (6.8%), green peas (3.5%) , dry peas (5.1%), onion (8.0%), potatoes (4.6%), malanga (3.5%) and tomato (5.2%).

The progression of the index "Clothing and Textiles, Footwear" result particularly of the positive variation in the tissue (1.8%), dress, jacket Universal (1.2%), pants for men (1.7%) of the shirt (1.3%) of underpants (2.6%), of skirt (1.9%), the panty girdle (6.2%) and socks (1.7%).

At the origin of the increase in the index "Rent Housing, Energy and Water" are essentially in the price increases in rent housing (1.5%) and water supply (7.3%).

The increase in the index "Other Goods and Services" is related mainly to the price increase for the perfume and eau de toilette (1.3%), dry toilet (2.0%), beauty care (2.2%) and watches (2.6%).

Inflation rate by region :

Of geographical point of view, the four major regions the country have been affected differently by inflation in September. Indeed, the Northern region which includes the departments of the North, Northeast and of Northwest and the Transversal region which covers the departments of Artibonite and Centre have experienced the highest inflation rate in September, or 1.5% each.

The southern region, which includes the departments of South, Grand Anse and Nippes, had an inflation rate of 1.2%.

he region of the metropolitan area, which includes Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Petion-Ville, Carrefour, Croix-des-Bouquets and the Western Region and the Southeast departments have experienced the lowest inflation rate, 0.8% each.
