Haiti - Environment : Sandy, Haiti in orange vigilance

The tropical depression associated with the 41st tropical wave of the season was indeed strengthened yesterday Monday afternoon before becoming a tropical storm, named Sandy. The center of the latter should pass on Jamaica by Wednesday to then ride on the eastern tip of Cuba, the next day [Thursday]. It should, at the same time affect Haiti, particularly the departments of South, South-East, Nippes and Grand Anse, before affecting the north and north-west into the night.

The SPGRD has therefore placed Haiti yesterday afternoon, in orange vigilance relatively to heavy seas, heavy rain and strong winds, with the risk of landslide, landslide and flooding over the major part of the country.

Tuesday morning, Sandy was, about 555 km south-west Kingston, Jamaica. Its maximum winds were blowing at 75 km/h.

The DPC has already activated a communication unit at the central level and also initiated the mobilization of civil protection structures throughout the country to continue to inform the public and accompany him if necessary.

The National Meteorological Centre (CNM), together with the SPGRD and DPC, asks the population of areas at risk to remain vigilant and strictly implement the following safety precautions :

  • Follow the evolution of the situation through your usual media: radio, television or Internet ;

  • Gather all your important papers and review your emergency kit ;

  • In case of severe storms, do not shelter near windows, wooded area and also avoid using your mobile ;

  • If your home is in an area at risk or if you live near a gully, of a stream of water, a beach or mountainside, make arrangements to go to the provided shelters or to a housing less exposed to flooding.
