Haiti - Health : Screening for diabetes in Petit-Goâve

Friday, the city of Petit-Goâve welcomed in the public square from 7:00 am a caravan of the Haitian Foundation for Diabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases (FHADIMAC) composed of 12 people, including 4 doctors Dr Nancy charles Larco, Dr Philippe Larco, Dr Cangeline Preval and the Dr Guy Robert Lahens, a nurse, Miss Gerta Besson and two social workers: Pedro Desrosiers and Lemeilleur Dorvilus.

More than 500 people, young and old, have undergone free testing for diabetes. Positive people, have received advice on diet to follow and precautions to be taken to prevent complications. Exercise, water consumption and many vegetables were recommended to diabetic patients, while soft drinks, foods containing flour are to avoid. The beneficiaries are very satisfied with the initiative of the FHADIMAC.

Dr. Charles Nancy Larco has raised awareness of the problems related to diabetes and explained the importance of early screening « We came to Petit-Goâve, in order to raise awareness, perform tests and change the public perception of diabetes, because some people still consider the disease as evil because of its complications and damage it can cause on the human body. However, diabetes can be controlled and one can live with it without problems. It suffices to know what to observe and what to eat. Hence the importance of information and awareness."
