Haiti - Economy : Slowdown in rising inflation

The Haitian Institute of Statistics and Informatics (IHSI) informs us that in October 2012, the Index of Consumer Prices (base 100 in August 2004) showed a slowdown in inflation rate, month on month, and an acceleration annualized, from 200.5 in September to 201.7 in October, accusing thus a monthly increase of 0.6% and a YoY of 6.8%, against respectively 1.1% and 6.5% the previous month.

Growth in monthly inflation is due mainly to the sectors "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" (0.3%), "Health" (0.3%) and "Leisure, Entertainment, Education and Culture" (6.9%).

The increase in the index of "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" is due to rising prices of products such as millet (+0.7%), ground corn (+3.1%), herring (+13.9%), salt herring (+3.0%), cod (+3.6%), eggs (+1.4%), edible oil (+0.4%), banana (+2.1%), green peas (+1.1%), dry peas (+5.0%), malanga (+4.9%), cassava (+2.5%), breadfruit (+2.5 %) and cocoa powder (+5.2%).

By cons, a downward trend was observed in rice prices (-0.6%), wheat flour (-0.5%), spaghetti (-0.3%), yam (-2.8%) and orange (-4.7%).

The increase in the index of "Health" is related to the increase in drug prices (+0.2%), fees paid to doctors (+0.5%) and hospitalization (+0.3%).

Variation in % compared to October :

Metropolitan Area (comprising the cities of Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Petion-Ville, Carrefour and Croix des Bouquets) : +0.4%, remains West (includes the departments of South-East and West not included in the metropolitan area of PAP) : +1.4%

Northern Region (comprising the departments of the North, Northeast and Northwest) +0.9%
