The state of emergency in force in Haiti was declared initially for a period of one month [Order dated October 30, 2012], due to extensive damage resulting from the passage of Sandy. This measure was also taken to help more than 1.5 million people facing severe food insecurity.

The Government remains convinced that additional interventions, must be made in some areas of the countrystill remain precarious, following the passage of these storms and intends in this sense, to take all necessary measures to support the local population in these difficult times.

To this end, the Government has decided to extend the state of emergency throughout the national territory during the period from 5 December 2012 to 5 January 2013. This provision aims primarily to pursue the Government's actions in favor of areas of the country affected by the storms that ravaged several acres of farmland and damaged heavily schools and road infrastructure.
