Haiti - Tourism : First collateral damage of the crisis...

A group of associations and tourist operators in the Dominican Republic, have criticized the dissemination of false information on the alleged presence of avian flu in the Dominican Republic.

The Group rejects "[...] the false statements of the Government of the Republic of Haiti, because they are harmful to the economic interests of the Dominican Republic, by affecting not only the egg and chicken producers, but also affects the flow of tourists who visit our country," we can read in one of the sections of this document.

The Dominican Association of Tour Operators (OPETUR), critical Haiti's decision to ban imports of chickens and eggs coming from the Dominican Republic, for fear of the entry into Haiti of avian influenza, while the virus is not present in the Dominican Republic.

Also, OPETUR and others like Adotur, Adavit, Asoture and Adoca, require the postponement "sine die" of an important meeting between Stéphanie Balmir Villedrouin, the Minister of Tourism of Haiti and the Dominican tourism sectors under the next "Bolsa Turística del Caribe" (BTC).

The document, signed by Mitchel Musa, President Opertur, by Linnette Arbaje of Adotur, by Viviana Santamarí of Adoca, Michelle Rosset of Asoture and Edison Ureña of Adavi, also states that "the Haitian government has deliberately used a false to affect the economy of a neighboring country, which provided services to the needy inhabitants of the neighboring countries, as does a good Samaritan..."
