In the context of the trade dispute on poultry products, that oppose Haiti and the Dominican Republic, the Veterinary Services of the two countries held a technical meeting Wednesday, during which the two sides agreed on the following points :

"For poultry products from the Dominican Republic, can once again be marketed in Haiti, a technical committee composed of experts from both countries, assisted by representatives of international organizations will be established shortly. This committee will develop a protocol for the application of rules with regard to avian influenza, dictated by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

This process provides that the veterinary services of the neighboring Republic, will submit to the Haitian veterinary services, a list of poultry farmsfree from avian influenza and able to fulfill all the requirements provided in the Health Code for Terrestrial Animals of the OIE. After verification by the veterinary services of the Republic of Haiti of the compliance with these standards, only certified companies will now have the power to export poultry products to Haiti and will have to comply continuously with the regulations provided in this area."

Veterinary services of the two countries have also expressed their intention to contribute in terms of technical support to investors of both countries, who are interested in the development of the poultry industry in Haiti. Thus, exports of poultry products from the Dominican Republic can be planned according to the needs of the market and taking into account the level of development of poultry production in Haiti.

These recommendations have been submitted for approval to the highest authorities of the two countries. Michel Chancy, Secretary of State for Animal Production, who led the delegation of experts of Haiti, announced that he has obtained the adhesion of Haiti to the recommendations of experts.

In addition, the Government of Haiti will take a series of measures to ensure that Haitian importers comply with regulations. Thus, any person or company wishing to constitute in importer of food products must first provide proof of its ability to transport and store the products in question under the required conditions. In addition, it must obtain from the Haitian government, a sanitary import permit for each lot to be imported.
