Haiti - Economy : 8th Petrocaribe Summit in Managua (Nicaragua)

This Friday, the Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe left the country to join the Haitian delegation composed inter alia : Wenceslas Lambert, President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Senate, Marie Carmelle Rose Anne Auguste, Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister for Human Right and the fight against extreme poverty, Andress Appolon, irector General of Electricity of Haiti, Gregory Mayard Paul, Presidential Adviser, Michael Lecorps, Director General of the Office of Monetization and Philippe Cineas, Secretary of State for Public Works and Transport, that participated on 28 and 29 June to the 8th Petrocaribe Summit in Managua.

President Martelly will join Saturday in Nicaragua, the Heads of State and Gouvernment of 18 beneficiaries of the Latin America and Caribbean countries.

Gathered around the President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, Petrocaribe member countries, will continue the discussions begun in January 2013, on the establishment of an economic zone, which provides the possibility to exchange with Venezuela food against oil.

Following the official visit Tuesday, of President Maduro, Prime Minister Lamothe stated "[...] We have talked about an agreement that will allow Haiti to pay for Venezuelan petroleum products with food produced in Haiti. Food against oil ! Guyana also has such an arrangement [rice against oil]. Thus, the debt we have to pay in Venezuela under the Petrocaribe agreement, would be reinvested in agriculture. This is great news !

The agricultural recovery that such an agreement implies is very encouraging for all Haitians. It will significantly increase the production, create jobs and enable us to export food products. Foods like rice, peas, red beans, corn, honey and sugar are at the top of the list of products that we wish to produce to be able to exchange. But through this stimulation of the industry, I also keep in mind the aim of the government to be self-sufficient in food [...]"

Moreover, the increase in oil consumption in Haiti, currently 14,000 barrels a day to 20,000 barrels per day, should be taken into consideration with a higher quota for Haiti.
