Haiti - Reconstruction : Infrastructure Works for drinking water in Cap-Haitien

Monday, as part of his tour in the Northern Department to evaluate certain infrastructure projects, the President Michel Martelly, accompanied, among others by, Lionel Duvalsaint, Director General of the National Directorate of Water Supply and Sanitation (Dinepa), the Interior Minister, David Bazile, and that of Social Affairs, Jean-Jacques Charles, visited in BelAir (Cap-Haitien), two water tanks freshly rehabilitated after thirty years of dysfunction. With these tanks, of a capacity of 575,000 gallons each, DINEPA currently serves approximately 40,000 people in the city center. This number will increase to 90,000 after reinforcement work.

In "Titans" and Fort St-Michel, another tank of 200,000 gallons supplies 60,000 people with drinking water. The first phase of the rehabilitation cost five million dollars financed by the Haitian State, the European Union, the Inter-American Development Bank and Oxfam GB.

The Head of State expressed his satisfaction with the efforts of state institutions concerned, to meet the needs of Capois and reiterated its determination to implement the necessary steps to allow Haitian families to be able to supply in drinking water.

Note that the Dinepa has already conducted a study to provide the entire city of Cap-Haitien and its suburbs with a distribution network modern for rinking water. 400,000 people are expected to benefit from the project, according to projections by the engineer Emmanus Dorval, Technical Director to the Dinepa. A budget of 50 million U.S. dollars for drinking water and sanitation is considered for this network.
