Haiti - Social : Distribution of materials to support persons with disabilities

On Wednesday, the Office of the Secretary of State for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities (BSEIPH), delivered a new wheelchair to Michel Percey, both legs amputated at the age of 30 due to illness. Michel is part of hundreds of people with disabilities who have benefited from this service by BSEIPH.

David Charles, the Responsible for the Bank of Equipment Adapted (BMA), explained that the beneficiaries are individuals who made a direct request in the office of hospitals or associations of persons with disabilities.

Wheelchairs, crutches, white canes, recording devices for the blind are among the materials offered by BSEIPH. The Bureau has received and distributed nearly a thousand of these materials, including 600 wheelchairs received in November 2012 and January 2013. Meanwhile, spare parts and technical support are available to beneficiaries for a better use of equipment and their maintenance.

The BSEIPH, as part of its collaboration with the organization Walkabout Foundation https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-5306-haiti-social-the-foundation-walkabout-announces-a-donation-of-10-000-wheelchairs.html will receive a total of 10,000 wheelchairs over a period of five years, 250 new seats will be available in the next August, informed David Charles. "The most important thing is not to provide these materials, it is to provide the disabled persons of suitable materials to ensure their autonomy and security in their various activities."

However, the Manager of the Bank of Adapted Material deplores the lack of material adapted to the needs, mentioning among other of increasingly requests of computer equipment adapted for executives with disabilities, tape and pediatric chairs. Mr. Charles, who reiterated the commitment of the BMA to work for the satisfaction of a greater number of needy said that further cooperation are planned for donations of equipment to help mobility.
