Haiti - Agriculture : Modernization of artisanal fisheries

With 1.535 km of coastline, Haiti is the second country in the Caribbean after Cuba, in coastal area, which offers considerable potential in terms of fishing that is why the Government has made considerable efforts to modernize fisheries in Haiti through the development of improved and sustainable artisanal fisheries. Include the installation of fish aggregating devices (FADs) along the coast and the training of fishermen.

These devices consist of a floating portion connected to an anchor that goes to the bottom of the sea (over 1,000 m). Tarps are attached to the first 50 meters, in order to cause a shadow to facilitate the proliferation of small organisms that attract small fish. Small fish in turn attract larger fish and thus form a food chain. These FADs are effective assistance tools for fishing large species of fish that live near the coast, such as tuna and other species...

Over 70 DCP have been installed in recent years in Haiti and the objective of the Ministry of Agriculture, is to install at least 300 over the next five years.

Haitian NGO AQUADEV, with financial support from the German Cooperation (GTZ) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural in support to this device, in the area of Palmes (Léogane, Petit-Goâve, Grand-Goâve and a part of the island of the Gonâve).
