Haiti - Politic : Laurent Lamothe talked about cholera and election with Ban Ki Moon

Saturday afternoon, the Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, accompanied by a few executives of his cabinet, closed his work week in New York with a meeting with the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki Moon.

On the issue of cholera, Laurent Lamothe expressed his conviction of the willingness of the UN to support the efforts of the Government, in accordance with the position he expressed Thursday in his address to the General Assembly https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-9532-haiti-politic-haiti-is-now-resolutely-and-permanently-engaged-on-the-path-of-progress.html where he proposed the creation of a joint commission between the Haitian party and the United Nations, in the perspective of finding a solution to the problem of cholera. The Head of Government had also suggested that a good part of "Global fund for eradication of cholera", is granted to the country in order to achieve to effectively fight against this disease.

The idea of ​​the Joint Commission was welcomed by Mr. Ban Ki Moon and Sandra Honoré [Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Haiti] which confirmed the arrival in Haiti, on 10 and 11 October, of UN experts to begin the work of this Commission.

Moreover, the Prime Minister mentioned the significant progress in the country during the past two years despite the economic difficulties. He welcomed the reduction of the military strength of the Minustah and thanked the UN for the technical assistance that will be provided to the National Police Academy as part of the training of the National Police of Haiti (PNH).

Regarding the elections, Laurent Lamothe reiterated to his interlocutor, the will of the Executive to complete the process and reminded the financial resources already available to the Transitional College of the Permanent Electoral Council (CTCEP) by his Government while reaffirming the determination of the administration Martelly to ensure free, fair and democratic elections.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the initiative of President Michel Martelly, that has started a frank and sincere dialogue with the political class and encouraged him to continue the constructive dialogue that began with the political parties to maintain a climate of peace in Haiti. He also welcomed the cooperation of the Government in the implementation of the disengagement plan of the Minustah, whose military strength will be reduced soon by 15%.

Finally, we note that after Haiti's participation in the 68th General Assembly of the United Nations, several cooperation agreements have been signed and investors have agreed to come and explore business opportunities in Haiti.
