Haiti - Diplomacy : Haiti no longer recognizes the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic

In an official statement, the Haitian government announced the withdrawal of the decision dated 22 November 2006 that recognized the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic [founded by the Polisario Front], which claims the sovereignty of a vast area of more than 200,000 km ² (Western Sahara) whose status has not been defined by international law. This is one of the oldest territorial disputes in the history of the twentieth century that lasts from November 6, 1975, the date of annexation by Morocco, which controls 80% of the territory.

Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs :

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informes that the Government of the Republic of Haiti has decided to withdraw the decision dated 22 November 2006 to recognize the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.

This decision aims to facilitate the process of resolving this issue in the Security Council of the United Nations and support the efforts of the Secretary General of that Organization and His Special Envoy to reach a political solution, lasting and mutually acceptable between the parties.

Similarly, the Government of the Republic of Haiti encourages the parties to continue negotiations in good faith to preserve the momentum generated by the Moroccan proposal to grant a status of autonomy to the Sahara region and reach a solution based on realism and a spirit of compromise in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the Security Council of the United Nations."
