Haiti - Humanitarian : Prime Minister pleads for a partnership with NGOs

Tuesday at Karibe Convention Center, was held the First National Forum on Non-Governmental Organizations of Development Assistance, under the theme "Reflections towards an improved state-NGO partnership". Nearly 300 representatives of NGOs on the 550 recognized in Haiti gathered for the occasion. The place and the role of NGOs in the mechanism of government o coordination, were the topics discussed in plenary.

In his speech, the Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe stated that this Forum "should give us the opportunity of a constructive dialogue to the search for solutions and mechanisms for sustainable partnership and indisputable results on the pace and quality of national development," calling on NGOs to coordinate their actions in a partnership with the state and act as part of the Strategic Development Plan of Haiti. "We have nothing against them, but we want to know what they are doing and make sure that what they do is part of the government's priorities [...] the NGO can not be in competition with the Haitian government on the funding of projects," requiring these organizations to have transparency in their actions.

For the Prime Minister, the forum reflects a recurrent concern to combine the efforts of NGOs in complementarity to the efforts of the government to "Avoid waste and duplication can not be a difficult objective to share."

In addition, the government presented to the representatives of NGOs at the Forum, a bill on the operation and regulation of NGOs, bill, that will soon be tabled in Parliament.
