Haiti - Denationalization : Trinidad and Tobago, with Haiti

Monday of, as part of a working visit to Port of Spain, capital of Trinidad and Tobago, the Chancellor Pierre-Richard Casimir, met the Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

This meeting which took place mainly around the Decision of the Constitutional Court of the Dominican Republic dated September 23, 2013 and its consequences, was followed by a statement from the Head of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, who stated "The ruling strips Dominican citizenship from people born in the Dominican Republic during this almost 85-year period. It is also widely viewed as discriminatory as it affects mostly Dominican-born people of Haitian descent."

The Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar that recognizes that people whose status and rights have been challenged by this sentence are facing a difficult situation, believes that countries in the region have an interest in getting together to find a solution to this problem. In Particular, CARICOM, whose Haiti is a member and the Dominican Republic seeks to integrate, has a major role to play in finding the solution.

Mrs. Persad-Bissessar, the current President of the CARICOM promised she will consult with the Secretary General of the Regional Organization, to explore the best way to solve the problem.

The Ministry Casimir, welcomed this position and will continue working with all partners and friends of the international community, especially the Caribbean and Latin America for the triumph of right and justice.
