Haiti - Denationalization : Chancellor Casimir met his counterpart from Guyana

Tuesday, following his meeting Monday with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar of Trinidad and Tobago, Pierre-Richard Casimir, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, met in Georgetown, his counterpart of the Republic of Guyana, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett.

Both Chancellors mainly discussed the Decision of the Constitutional Court of the Dominican Republic on September 23, 2013 and its potential impact on the Dominicans of Haitian descent. Minister Casimir has reported the great concern of the Government of Haiti in relation to the decision of the highest court of the neighboring Republic and its consequences while seeking support from the Government of Guyana to the Haitian position.

Following this meeting, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett declared in a statement that "this is a violation of the human and political rights of these citizens and the impact of the implementation of this ruling could be catastrophic."

Chancellor Rodrigues-Birkett, encourages the Dominican Republic to give serious consideration regarding the application of this ruling in view of the valued contribution made by these persons to the development of the Dominican Republic.

Chancellor Guyanese calls on the relevant authorities of the Dominican Republic to respect the right to nationality and international human rights principles.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs enthusiastically welcomes this new support to the Haitian position on this issue and continues to mobilize partners of Haiti, according to the wishes of President Martelly and Prime Minister Lamothe.
