Haiti - Culture: Opening of the exhibition «The Odyssey of black music»

Thursday, President Michel Martelly, accompanied by the First Lady, Sophia Martelly, officially opened at the National Museum of Haiti Pantheon (MUPANAH), the first presentation in the Caribbean of the traveling exhibition "The Odyssey of black music ".

This opening ceremony took place under the sign of diversity and enhancement of the world's musical heritage was attended by Ms. Josette Darguste, Acting Minister of Culture and different initiators of the event, namely Marc Benaïche the Representative of the french media, producer of the concept, Mondomix, Michèle Frisch, Director of MUPANAH and Corine Michaelli, Director of the French Institute of Haiti (IFH).

"This exhibition carries a clear message promoting black music as World Heritage", welcomed Ms. Frisch who stated that this exhibition in Haiti is justified by the fact that Haiti was the first independent black state in the new world.

The First Lady, Sophia Martelly, intervening as Honorary President of MUPANAH stated that this activity is a step towards the recognition of the contribution of Haiti to world culture. "Our music has its place in the pantheon of world music, thanks to the talents of orchestras, bands and artists who have found the right rhythm to sing our moods and move them beyond our borders," acknowledging the merit of those artists whose career and outstanding contribution to the development of music worldwide, are indisputable.

The Head of State, decorated in the circumstances, as an artist-founder and representative of "Sweet Micky," explained the importance in the life of a nation, of the music he considers as a medium, a unique identity, a tool of national and international cultural promotion. "It is essential to stimulate the sector, by mentoring artists, writers and composers, encouraging the Haitian media to give priority to the Haitian music on the airwaves and by valuing programs to promote authors and composers Haitians without nevertheless restrain diversity."

Sophia Martelly and Ms. Michele Frisch, took advantage of this opening to deliver plates of honor to the musical groups Septentrional (65), Tropicana (50), Tabou Combo (45), Sweet Micky (25), as well as posthumous honors to the artists Azor and Toto Bissainthe.

The exhibition "The Odyssey of black music" is open to the public from 8 to 27 November 2013.
