Haiti - Agriculture : Rice production in the Artibonite increase

In a press briefing given to the Primature Thursday, November 28, the Organization of Development of the Artibonite Valley (ODVA), in the latest figures provided by its Director General, Kénel Francique, reported increase in various fields during the year 2012-2013 at the level of rice we increased from 44,000 hectares between 2011-2012 to 50,000 hectares in 2012-2013, at the level ofunhusked rice (paddy) there was an increase from 150,000 tonnes to 175,000 tonnes in 2012-2013 and at the level of husked from 90.000 to 105.000 tonnes for this year.

The Director General of the ODVA also stated that the organization has performed the maintenance of irrigation channels for watering crops surfaces in the Artibonite Valley ; of agricultural roads were built ; a guidance was provided to farmers who received agricultural tools, fertilizers and seeds. In addition, ten new tractors are now available to enhance production. In addition, more than one hundred thousand acres of sweet potatoes were grown.

"We just start the dry season. Our teams are mobilized for services to growers. Water management, cleaning of irrigation canals, the drilling of agricultural roads," informs the director of ODVA.

Recall that the Artibonite River irrigates about 30,000 hectares in the department of Artibonite, including paddy fields but also beans, onion, sweet potato, banana plantations...

Kénel Francique indicates that the prices of products such as rice and beans decreased without omitting than for there is food security it is necessary that "the population has money to buy the products," adding "if not we are facing food insecurity."

The ODVA, intervenes in 8 regions of the lower Artibonite (Saint-Marc, Verrettes, Petite-Rivière de l’Artibonite, Dessalines, Desdunes, L’Estère, Grande-Saline and La Chapelle) or 4,984 square kilometers, crossed by the Artibonite River along 320 km.

Mr. Kénel Francisque, confident in the positive work of his team promises to work for even more compelling results of the Organization of Development of the Artibonite Valley.
