Haiti - Environment : The President Martelly at Caribbean Climate Summit 2015

On Saturday, President Michel Martelly, accompanied by Henri Claude Germain, Minister of the Environment, Wilson Laleau, Minister of Economy and Finance, and Jude Hervé Day, Minister of Trade and Industry, participated in Martinique, to the Caribbean Climate Summit 2015 https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-13809-icihaiti-environment-climate-caribbean-summit-2015.html a preparatory regional summit to the United Nations Climate Change Conferenc (COP21) to be held in Paris from 30 November to 15 December of this year.

Chaired by French President François Hollande, the summit, which brought together nearly forty countries of the region, aimed to bring together the countries of the Caribbean island in a dynamic of solidarity and fraternity with respect to geographical consequences including of the emission of greenhouse gases in these territories.

In his speech, Michel Martelly declared "I congratulate François Hollande for this initiative to prepare governments of the region face the challenges of climate change. I thank the President of the Regional Council of Martinique for its warm welcome and hospitality. Today, no one is immune to the disastrous consequences of climate change. Climate change are among the major problems of our generation, this summit is therefore taking place at an opportune time. The establishment of early warning systems is part of Haiti efforts to limit climate change-related disasters. This Summit is an opportunity for my Government to clarify our position and the commitments we intend to take on the eve of COP21," then the Head of State has focused on the danger that threatens the global community "Today, no one is immune to the disastrous consequences of climate change. We all are, both victims and perpetrators. Increasing temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, floods, prolonged droughts, the movement of species in search of more suitable living spaces are all negative effects generated by climate disturbances that threaten the existence of humanity."

Furthermore, the President Martelly believes that only well-coordinated initiatives may give convincing results. "We must act together so that the present generation and future generations have the opportunity to achieve sustainable development."

The conclusions of this meeting will contribute to deepen the reflections in December 2015, when governments around the world will gather at the United Nations Conference to decide on the measures and find solutions to act to address climate change.
