Haiti - Tomas : Haiti the alert level goes RED 02/11/2010 12:46:13
Tomas tropical storm moves over the Caribbean Sea. This Tuesday at 5:00am, the center of Tomas was located at 13.5 degrees north and 72.6 degrees West. 553 km south of Port au Prince (350 miles) with sustained winds of 85 km/h (50 mph) a slight increase compared to Monday (+10%). Tomas moves at 19 km/h (12 mph) very slight slowdown since this morning (the storm grows). Forecast models shows that the change of trajectory towards west-northwest, then accentuated towards northwest will occur in the next 45 hours. Tomas will continue to weaken slightly but could begin to strengthen in the evening on Tuesday. Forecasters expect the storm Tomas could become a Category 1 hurricane on Thursday around 2:00 am (winds of 119-153 kph (74-95 mph) To this end, the Permanent Secretariat of Risk Management and Disaster (SPGRD) passed this Tuesday, November 2, 2010 to a level of vigilance RED threats of gusty winds, thunderstorms, heavy rain with flood risk and overflow of rivers, landslides and flooding of severe intensity for all departments especially the South, Nippes, the Southeast, Grande Anse and West. The National Meteorological Center (CNM) in conjunction with the SPGRD and Direction of Civil protection (DPC) is asking the public living in the risk areas, to remain vigilant and strictly implement the following safety guidelines:
