Haiti - Weather : End and review of the 2020 hurricane season

On Monday was held the official closing ceremony of the hurricane season which begins on June 1 of each year which generally runs for a period of 6 months until November 30.

During his speech, Prime Minister Joseph Jouthe, also President of the National Committee for Risk and Disaster Management, invited the population to trust the structures of the Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC) and the climatic authorities involved in the management of climatic hazards conditions, in order to prevent and avoid deplorable tragedies that could cost the lives of compatriots and cause enormous damage to the country's infrastructure.

Recall that the forecasts of the Tropical Meteorology Project team at Colorado State University (CSU) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-30685-haiti-flash-the-hurricane-season-2020-more-active-than-normal.html forecast a more active-than-normal season in the Atlantic basin with 16 named storms (gusts greater than 100 km/h or more), 8 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes (category 3 or higher with winds over 180 km/h on the Hurricane Saffir-Simpson wind scale).

Two storms Laura https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-31660-haiti-flash-laura-31-dead-8-missing-more-than-8-000-victims-and-significant-agricultural-losses-assessment-august-28.html and Isaias hhttps://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-31441-haiti-news-zapping.html https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-31417-haiti-flash-first-assessment-of-the-storm-isaias.html have come close to Haiti. However, due to the advanced degradation of its environment, the country recorded relatively high damage caused mainly by Storm Laura.

On the human level, Haiti recorded for the 2020 season, 31 dead, 8 injured and 8 missing;

In terms of housing, 6,272 houses flooded, 2,320 houses damaged, 243 houses destroyed and 8,835 families affected;

For the agricultural sector, a vital sector for food security and the national economy, considerable damage has been recorded in crops, livestock and fishing.

Regarding infrastructure, including roads, bridges, engineering structures and hydro-agricultural infrastructure (irrigation canals, penetration roads and storage sites) have been greatly affected.
