Haiti - Earthquake : More than half of churches are destroyed

The number of victims of the earthquake is more and more dramatic every day hhttps://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34525-haiti-flash-the-toll-is-growing-nearly-15-000-victims-partial-assessment.html Mgr. Pierre André Dumas, Bishop of Anse-à-Veau-Miragoâne, tells how the inhabitants of his diocese find themselves with nothing "Seven out of ten houses no longer exist, even parishes and canonical houses have been swept away. Everything is lacking, even water." https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34525-haiti-flash-the-toll-is-growing-nearly-15-000-victims-partial-assessment.html

Mgr. Dumas emphasizes that priests, nuns and missionaries are ready to help in the midst of the dramatic situation in Haiti, affirming "They are the testimony that God never abandons anyone."

"It is a difficult moment, of trial, which we must live with a lot of faith", declared the Bishop of Anse-à-Veau-Miragoâne, one of the dioceses most affected by the earthquake " It is also a moment in which you have to intervene, be close and listen to people's needs."

The entire area of the Anse-à-Veau-Miragoâne diocese has been literally devastated. “We still have no contact with the people who live in the mountains and in isolated areas […] People need everything, even of water. That is why we are asking for help from other countries. "

Mgr. Dumas says that the priests of his diocese, along with the nuns and missionaries, do everything possible to help the survivors "The accompaniment of my priests, sisters and brothers is constant [...]" stressing that "moments of solidarity alternate with those of prayer" specifying that the few basic goods that the local Church received were immediately shared.

Regarding the state of diocesan infrastructure, the situation is also dramatic, deplores Bishop Dumas "many canonical houses and parishes have been literally razed to the ground. We did some checking and found that more than half of the churches no longer exist. But, despite everything, the priests are present : they accompany the faithful and try to meet their needs. They are in town to show that God has not abandoned his people."
